EATING OUT

In towns, there are some very reasonable local places for lunch as most Trinis prefer a proper lunch, not a snack. In recent years, however, Port of Spain and the larger towns in Trinidad, as well as Scarborough and Crown Point in Tobago, have seen an increase in restaurant culture. Ariapita in Woodbrook in Port of Spain is considered the island’s restaurant center, and most of Tobago’s restaurants are in the touristy southwestern tip, Scarborough, and the northeast. Sit-down dining establishments in the mid-range and higher, with good, creative menus are scarce outside Port of Spain. Inevitably they are expensive, as are restaurants specializing in niche European food, such as Italian or French. People come from all over Trinidad to San Fernando for halal meats barbequed over coals and served with garlic rolls, salad, and fries.
